Ambulance Services


The IWCCG commissions Ambulance services from the IW NHS Trust.  Annually the service responds to around 24,950 emergency incidents per annum.  As well as a 999 service the IW NHS Trust provides integrated support through a single Communication Hub and provides services listed below. Services Commissioned through the Ambulance Department are:

  • Emergency Ambulance Service
  • NHS 111 pilot service (for when it’s less urgent than 999)
  • Patient Transport Service
  • Hospital Car Service

Alongside these serivces, the ambulance team are also working on a number of projects to imporve patient experience including:

  • A review of the Patient Transport Service and payment mechanisms
  • Transforming the ambulance service from a conveyance service to a clinical service
  • Implement new national payment mechanism whilst maintaining the achievement of national targets
  • Evaluate the NHS 111 pilot to date and review future commissioning options
  • Developing and maintaining a Directory of Services in order to fully utilise its functionality in terms of signposting 111 callers to the most appropriate service.
